Dolores “Dodie” Jean Maxfield (nee Farrar), 88 years of age, and a resident of Ocean Shores, Wash. for the past 20 years, died on Friday, March 3, 2017, in Montesano, Wash. She was born the oldest of three children on March 8, 1928, in Tacoma, Wash. to Ned and Beatrice (Vanslyke) Farrar.

Dodie was raised in Tacoma and attended Lincoln High School. She did not graduate but went to work at a young age to assist her family, her first job being at Horlick’s Ice Cream Parlor in downtown Tacoma. She then worked for Woolworths until she took a position at the Tacoma Mall, JC Penney Store. She retired from Penney’s in 1995 after 30 plus years of service. After retirement she worked at the Tacoma Costco as a sample associate because she loved to keep busy and enjoyed talking to people.

Dolores married Edmund Sidney Maxfield on Feb. 19, 1949, at Little Church on the Prairie in Lakewood. They resided in Tacoma for 48 years until retiring to Ocean Shores in 1997. Together they raised four children in South Tacoma. Dodie enjoyed watching her children participate in a variety of activities such as sports, drill team, singing, cheerleading, dancing, and motorcycle riding. Mom always made sure her kids were able to participate and gave herself selflessly to drive them where they needed to be. Home and family were her focus, purpose, and joy in life while still working full time. She and Ed made a good parenting team. Mom was kind, giving, and a strong woman but she could be very mischievous as well. She enjoyed having a good time!

After retiring to Ocean Shores in 1997, Mom joined the quilting group and made many beautiful quilts for her family. She loved to sew. She was part of the Out to Lunch Bunch and volunteered at the Senior Center to help serve meals. After Edmund died in 2008, she continued to live in Ocean Shores until 2015 when she moved to Channel Point Village Assisted Living in Hoquiam.

Dolores is survived by her three children, Mark Maxfield and wife, Patti, of Hoquiam, Linda Schantz and husband, Charles, of Ellensburg, and Kelly Maxfield of Gig Harbor. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Maxfield in 1970. She had six grandchildren, Brock, Michael, Joshua, Molly, Blake, and Austin. She was preceded in death by granddaughter, Jenny. She was able to enjoy seven great-grandchildren; Ryker, Britton, Piper, Hadley, Quinn, Abbie, and Matthew. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Gary Farrar.

The family has requested donations be made to PAWS of Grays Harbor, 800 West 1st Street, (P.O. Box 451), Aberdeen, WA 98520, www.pawsgh.org or to your local food bank.
