Denny W. Stopsen, 87 years of age and a longtime reseident of Grays Harbor County, died on Jan. 20, 2020, at Avalon Nursing Home. He was born on Dec. 8, 1932, to Rudolph Richard and Yerda Marie (Johnson) Stopsen.

He lived most of his life in the Wishkah Valley. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen and then served in the U.S. Army.

Following his years of military service, he worked as a mechanic at Morehead Motors in Aberdeen for many years. He was remembered by his younger brothers as a postiive influence in their apprenticship of pursuing careers in the auto industry with mechanics and auto body.

Later, he followed his true passion for fishing. His many years of fishing became his legacy to all who knew him. He was successful as the captain of three F/V boats over the years that he purchased: #1 Diane, #2 Ruby J, #3 Yerda Marie (named after his mother).

His years of dedication led him from fishing salmon to bottom fishing (white fish) to tuna and shrimp. He survived a catastrophic accident when his boat was overturned at a certain point in his career, and was remembered as a “survivor.”

He held one of the last commercial fisherman licenses in a controversial industry over the shore of the Pacific Ocean. His generosity with the profits he made are remembered by all.

Denny W. Stopsen is survived by his son David Stopsen in Washington State; grandchildren Kyle, Kolten and Destinie; his brothers Bob (Darlene), Gene (Jessie) and John; sister Jane; his wife Sharon; sister in-law Lois and other relatives.

As a family, we remember his laughter the most. He had a great sense of humor. His laughter will remain in our hearts forever like a song. He received Jesus as his savior in his last days and passed away peacefully. All who knew him loved him.

A celebration of life will be held at Knotty Pine, 201 E. Dock St., Westport, WA. Feb. 24, 2020 at 3 p.m.
