Daniel Thomas Marshall

Daniel Thomas Marshall, son of Ken and Esther Marshall, passed away at his home in Aberdeen on May 15, 2021, from complications of diabetes at age 64.

Dan was a lifelong resident of the Harbor and loved Aberdeen. He graduated from Weatherwax High in 1977 and worked in the family-founded business, Marshall’s Garden & Pet, for many years. Most recently he worked at Grocery Outlet. He is survived by his sister Mary Pat Marshall of Aberdeen and his sister and “big brother” Toni and Mel Harris of Folsom, California.

Dan was a unique person who was afflicted by autism long before it was a commonly recognized condition. Autism creates its own kind of isolation which Dan translated into a monk-like life. He was a lesson to other people by the example he set. He never drank alcohol, smoked or took any drugs. He never used foul language or spoke ill of others. He never complained about his obstacles. He was courteous and kind to everyone. He was indeed a very interesting, funny and unusual person.

Through fierce independence and perseverance, he made a life full of his own interests. He was well-known on the model train swap meet circuit. He was nothing less than an aficionado on all things Disney, and he made an annual trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld for decades. He was a savant about old movies and television and dazzled his family and friends with fascinating details.

Dan was known for his distinctive expressions and might say in this very moment if asked where he is, “That’s for me to know and you to find out.” He has been greatly loved and will be terribly missed by family and friends.

He will be interred at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen. No services will be held but donations in his memory can be made to PAWS of Grays Harbor or the Aberdeen Museum.
