Dale “Diesel” Sundstrom, 61 passed away peacefully at his family home Nov. 9, 2020.

Dale “Diesel” Sundstrom, 61, passed away peacefully at his family home Nov. 9, 2020, surrounded by his wife and daughters, after a two-year battle with cancer.

Dale Eric Sundstrom was born Nov. 13, 1958, in Everett, Washington, to Nels Eric Sundstrom and Anita Elaine (Blevins) Sundstrom. Dale attended schools in Aberdeen, Washington. As a child he enjoyed Boy Scouts, camping with cousins, playing Babe Ruth baseball as a catcher, and football. He graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1977. Shortly after, he met Cindy Sweatman. They were married March 20, 1980, at the home of the bride in Neilton, Washington. Dale and Cindy celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this past March.

Dale went to work for Sweatman Trucking. He drove both log and dump trucks for the family business. Diesel Dale loved hauling logs. He had done this for more than 37 years. Together they raised three daughters. He loved being a Dad to Kelsey, Kami and Katie. When his first of nine grandchildren were born, he said “It was the best feeling in the world.”

Family was everything to Dale. He loved being a grandpa above all else. He hardly ever missed a game, tournament, or race. He loved watching his daughters and then grandkids in all the sports they played, often driving his log truck to the event after work. He would pay them for a re-bound, goal or “hitting it to the grass.” Dale was very involved in his grandson’s racing. He was Tyler’s mechanic, crew chief and biggest fan. Dale also enjoyed deer hunting and trout fishing on the Humptulips River with his grandkids. He was a self-proclaimed chocoholic and loved watching Judge Judy.

Dale is survived by his wife, Cindy of the family home; daughter Kelsey (Scott Fritts) of Montesano, Washington and their children: Madison German, Macie German and Dylin Fritts; daughter Kami Sundstrom of Hoquiam, Washington and her children: Tyler Sundstrom, Cameron Green and Baylor Green; and daughter Katie (Ben Gage) of Hoquiam and their children: Ryland Kutyna, Mica Kutyna and Peyton Gage; as well as in-laws Bill and Anne Sweatman of Neilton and his two brothers. Dale was proceeded in death by his parent, Nels and Anita Sundstrom.

There will be a private celebration of life at a later date.
