Vacant home burns in Elma

An abandoned home in the 100 block of Blockhouse Road North south of Elma was destroyed by a fire Sunday evening, according to a statement issued by Grays Harbor Fire District 5.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze shortly after 6:30 p.m. and found the residence to be fully engulfed when they arrived. The property owners told firefighters the residence had been vacant for several years.

Firefighters had the blaze knocked down by 7:42 p.m. A total of 40 firefighters, including personnel from the Elma Fire Department, Fire District 1 and Fire District 12, fought the fire.

Investigators returned to the scene Monday morning to try to determine the cause of the fire.
