Two homes considered total losses after Friday afternoon West Market Street fire

A debris and trailer fire spread to two homes in the 1500 block of West Market Street in Aberdeen Friday afternoon, resulting in the total loss of both homes and several vehicles.

At 1:45 p.m. an Aberdeen firefighter was driving the department ladder truck to a fueling depot on Port Industrial Road when he noticed the fire. He radioed the 911 dispatch center and evacuated the two occupied residences.

”As the full complement of the Aberdeen Fire Department arrived on scene minutes later the fire had already spread into the attics of both homes and involved a trailer and two vehicles,” said Aberdeen Battalion Chief Troy Palmer. “A second alarm was requested as well as an additional engine from Cosmopolis Fire Department and Grays Harbor Fire District No. 2.”

The Hoquiam Fire Department was already responding with one engine from the initial dispatch. As additional units and personnel arrived, including the Aberdeen Fire Chief Tom Hubbard and Assistant Fire Chief Rich Malizia, the scene was separated into two working incidents. A third alarm was called to get additional personnel. Interior fire attacks were conducted into both of the burning structures, said Palmer.

A total of 34 firefighters from Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Cosmopolis, and Grays Harbor Fire District 2 operated on the scene, with the Aberdeen Police Department, Grays Harbor PUD, and Cascade Natural Gas assisting. Multiple medical calls and a fire alarm came in during the fire and were handled by mutual aid agencies, said Palmer.

Damage assessments were still underway, but both homes and several vehicles are considered total losses. Palmer said the cause is currently under investigation: “however the point of origin has been determined outside, and in between the two residences.”

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.
