Two arrested in Monday shooting death in Moclips

A person of interest in Monday’s shooting death of Moclips resident Zachary Christensen has been located and released, but two other people were arrested in connection with the shooting, according to Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Brad Johansson.

Christensen, 36, was shot during an altercation in Moclips a little before 6 p.m. Monday and was taken by private car to the Grays Harbor Fire District 8 station. He was then taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives initially wanted to talk to Lareciana “Lala” Broussard-James and referred to her as a person of interest. She was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon, said Johansson.

“Upon further investigation, detectives learned from witnesses and speaking with those involved in the altercation that Broussard-James had been confronted by three people in regards to an alleged theft,” said Johansson. “Broussard-James was confronted by a 62-year-old male Moclips resident, 45-year-old female Copalis Crossing resident, and the victim — Zachery Christensen.”

Johansson said Broussard-James was assaulted during the confrontation and at one point a firearm was pointed at her. A struggle ensued over the firearm, and during the course of the struggle the firearm was discharged, fatally striking Christensen, according to Johansson.

Detectives located and arrested the 62-year-old male and the 45-year-old female.

“They were booked on murder in the second degree,” said Johansson. “A defendant can be charged with murder in the second degree if he or she commits or attempts to commit any felony, including assault, and in the course of committing the crime, he or she causes the death of another person.”

Detectives recovered two guns used during the altercation, said Johansson. The case is being forwarded to the Grays Harbor County Prosecutor for charging consideration. County Prosecutor Katie Svoboda said both were scheduled for a 1 p.m. Wednesday initial appearance. “We will not formally charge them and will use a 72-hour hold so we can get more reports,” said Svoboda.

Broussard-James was released from custody and the investigation is continuing. If you have any information about this case, contact Detective Beck at 360-964-1770.
