The Westport Charterboat Association Derby winners for 2019 have been announced, including a 60.55-pound halibut taken by Olympia’s Jeromy Jording in May.
Jording takes home $1,000 after buying a derby ticket before his trip May 12 aboard the Ultimate with Captain Phil Westrick.
Todd Lakin of Sumner grabbed a derby ticket before setting out with Captain Dwight Sawin aboard the Tornado June 20, and his 33.7-pound lingcod earned him $1,500 as the biggest derby entry of 2019.
The largest tuna weighed in during the derby was a 32.95-pound albacore caught by Rusty Pixton of Richland. He caught the fish Sept. 2 while fishing aboard the Ms. Magoo with Captain Dave McGowen.
The largest coho, worth $1,500 in the derby, was caught by Ronald Baulotte of Zillah on Aug. 28. He was fishing aboard the Stardust with Captain Johnny Banasky. As announced on The Daily World outdoors page Oct. 19, the winning Chinook weighed 26.2 pounds and was caught by Dennis Klain, who was fishing aboard the Stardust July 22.
According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, 23,465 anglers fished out of Westport during the salmon season ending Sept. 30. A total of 2,336 Chinook were landed, along with 20,221 coho. There were also 700 pink salmon counted.
The seasonal coho quota was 59,050 and Fish and Wildlife said 34% of the Westport sub-quota was reported. The Chinook quota was 12,700, and 18% of that area sub-quota was taken, according to Fish and Wildlife.
