The second of two “active-shooter” response drills will again draw multiple local law enforcement and fire departments to Elma on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The drill takes place at two locations: Elma Elementary School, at 1235 Monte-Elma Road, and Elma High School at 1011 West Main Street. Citizens should expect local road closures and delays, loud sounds and a large police and fire presence at both locations, much like what was experienced during the first drill held Dec. 4. The main street in front of the high school will be closed from Division Street to 13th Street during the drill.
Volunteers will be used to simulate an active-shooter scenario at the high school. The drill is designed to test incident command concepts, communication challenges, efficient and effective use of available resources and to help train first responders. This second drill will also involve Summit Pacific Medical Center, so staff can practice their mass casualty protocols. There should be no impact to patient care or services.
Citizens are asked to stay clear of both schools during the event as the drill areas are kept secure for the safety of all participants. School and community officials are invited to observe the drill provided they contact Elma Police Chief Susan Shultz ahead of time at (360) 482-3131 or chief@cityofelma.com and check in with her the morning of the exercise.
