Remains identified in north Hoquiam domestic violence fire, shooting

Bodies were those of Bret Moore and Tanya Rondon

Updated Sept. 16

The Grays Harbor County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identities of the two victims of the domestic violence shooting and fire on Chenois Valley Road north of Hoquiam on Sept. 1.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office, which is handling the investigation because police officers from several agencies discharged their weapons during the incident, said the coroner identified the remains as those of Bret Moore and Tanya Rondon.

According to Coroner Robert Kegel, “Tanya … died as a result of homicidal violence. Her manner of death is homicide. Bret Moore’s cause and manner are pending results of toxicology testing.”

Investigators continue to interview witnesses and the officers involved. No further information was made available Tuesday.

The incident involved a married couple, their 18-year-old son and a struggle over a firearm. The son was able to leave the residence, but the husband and wife remained inside, both possibly wounded. After a three-hour standoff with law enforcement, explosions were heard from the home and shots were exchanged between someone inside the home and officers.

The fire destroyed the house and the husband and wife were presumed dead.
