Elma police are looking for two men who allegedly placed a “skimming” device on an ATM machine at the Elma Anchor Bank branch Friday in order to steal electronic account information.
Such devices are designed to fit over the card reader on an ATM machine and when unsuspecting customers put their cards in the machine, account information can be read and stolen.
Police have surveillance camera images of a man they say placed the skimmer Friday evening and images of another man who returned Saturday evening to change it out.
Elma police say card numbers have been accessed in the Lacey area at two separate banks. Anchor Bank is in the process of notifying all customers who may have been affected, police said.
The suspects were seen in a gray 2018 Hyundai Tucson bearing Washington license plate BJK5028. This is a rental vehicle from the Seatac Airport, which was rented May 17, to be returned May 31. It is listed as “not returned” by the rental company.
Anyone who sees the vehicle or who has information about the case should call 911 or the Elma Police Department 360-482-3131.
