Polar Plunge set to make a splash Jan. 1

As the New Year approaches, Ocean Shores friends are gearing up for a third year of camaraderie, and a memorable, adventurous start to 2025.

The Unofficial, Official Ocean Shores Polar Plunge will take place on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, Jan. 1st at 11 a.m. Organized by the Ocean Shores Senior Surf Club and the Ocean Shores Ladies Society, this informal non-sponsored event is all about fun and fellowship, welcoming everyone who wants to embrace the thrill of a chilly ocean dip.

Participants and spectators are encouraged to gather on the beach not far from the Chance a La Mer Avenue beach access next to the Shilo Inn. Look for the cheerful group around a bonfire, sipping hot cocoa and sharing stories.

As the clock ticks closer to noon, excitement builds in anticipation of the plunge, which will officially kick off with a countdown. At high noon, brave (possibly crazy) souls will take the plunge into the icy waters of the Pacific Ocean, which will be in the high 40s to low 50s. While the plunge is meant for those who seek adventure, it’s important to note that participants do so at their own risk.

If you have any health concerns, especially if you are very young or very senior, it might be a good idea to watch from the warmth and safety of the beach.

For those willing to make the plunge, make sure to bring warm, dry clothes and towels for after your dip. Participants are encouraged to wear quirky costumes to add to the festive atmosphere. This gathering is open to the public of all ages, whether you’re diving in or cheering from the shore, come ready to join in on the excitement and make new friends. Grab your warmest blanket, your wildest costume and your sense of adventure — this year’s Ocean Shores Polar Plunge is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories (and maybe a few goosebumps).
