Olympic coast sanctuary council meets Jan. 20

Agenda includes monitoring killer whales in the sanctuary

The advisory council for Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary will meet virtually, using GoToMeeting on Friday, Jan. 20.

The sanctuary is administered by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and was designated in 1994 as the first national marine sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest. It encompasses nearly 3,200 square miles of significant natural and cultural resources off the Washington coast, extending from Cape Flattery to the mouth of the Copalis River.

The council will consider adoption of the draft 2023 annual work plan and meeting schedule and the Whale Reporting Group recommendation memo. The council will receive presentations on management plan public scoping and monitoring killer whales in the sanctuary. The Sanctuary Advisory Council is composed of 21 representatives of various local and regional organizations and agencies whose role is to advise the sanctuary superintendent on matters of policy and in reviewing strategic plans.
