More wind, rain headed for the coast

Up to 8 inches of rain forecast in GH, Pacific counties through Tuesday

Another storm system moving in from the southwest will bring a sustained period of heavy rain and high winds to the coast, according to the National Weather Service. Wind may gust up to 50 mph at times.

As much as 8 inches of rain was predicted to fall in much of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties between Dec. 11 and 17.

The latest forecast calls for rainfall in Hoquiam and Aberdeen of more than 1 inch today, a half-inch Friday, another half-inch Sunday morning and afternoon, and nearly 1 inch late Monday into early Tuesday morning.

Strong winds are expected along the coast, including Westport and Ocean Shores. Sustained winds of 30 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph today will diminish later, but are still expected to be between 20 and 30 mph before climbing back to 30 mph with gusts nearing 40 Friday morning.

Winds are forecast to pick up again Saturday, with sustained 25 mph winds and gusts up to 30 mph expected through Monday afternoon. Then they will pick up with gusts to 35 mph into Tuesday morning.

In Aberdeen and Hoquiam, gusts nearing 35 mph will diminish late Friday into Saturday, with gusts of about 20 mph Sunday morning. Late Monday and early Tuesday, winds will be between 20 and 25 mph sustained with gusts to 35, according to the forecast.

Marine forecast

The marine forecast out of Westport calls for south winds to 35 knots Friday, expected to produce 19- to 22-foot combined seas before the wind starts to subside to 15 to 25 knots after midnight.

Winds are expected to climb to 25 to 35 knots with combined seas 13 to 16 feet Saturday.

On Sunday, winds are forecast out of the southeast at 20 to 30 knots with waves up to 5 feet subsiding later in the day. A southwest swell at 20 feet becoming westerly and building to 23 feet later in the day also are forecast for Sunday.
