Memorial Day services planned around the Harbor

Saturday, May 26

North Beach VFW Post will hold a service during the 11th Annual Expo at the Ocean Shores Convention Center, including raising the flag at noon, a fallen soldier cross ceremony, and honoring Purple Heart recipients and all veterans.

Sunday, May 27

The annual Blessing of the Fleet is held at 1 p.m. at the Fishermen’s Monument at the foot of Neddie Rose Drive in the Westport Marina District. It includes the calling out of names of local fishermen and Coast Guard personnel who have lost their lives, accompanied by the tolling of a ship’s bell for each one. A special blessing for those who continue to go out on the waters to make a living or to help seafarers in trouble will be included.

Monday, May 28

Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen will host a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. with presentations by local veterans organization, auxiliaries and service clubs. Everyone is invited.

Hoquiam VFW Post No. 1135 will hold a service at 11 a.m. in Veterans Park on the corner of Eighth and Simpson. This event is open to the public. Free hot dogs and salads will be served after the service.
