It was stormy, but nothing unusual for this time of year

A weather system that pelted the area with rain and high winds starting Thursday has been deemed to be a typical winter storm for the area, according to forecasters from the National Weather Service.

The storm, which forecasters earlier in the week stated had the potential to be severe, turned out to be what is often seen in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties this time of year.

“(This storm) was an interesting case. We use computer models to forecast, and they were really struggling with this system,” said Dave Elson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service’s Portland office. “Things were evolving very quickly during the course of the week regarding changes in the models, so we were kind of struggling to keep up with that. Compared to what (forecasters) saw Wednesday to what actually happened, it wasn’t a great simulation of what was expected. Ultimately, the storm wound up being, more or less, a run-of-the-mill storm.”

As of Friday morning, no current power outages have been reported in Raymond, and while city officials are preparing for the potential for some minor flooding in the area, they too are treating the storm as routine for the season and location.

“It’s very normal for here. Nothing out of the ordinary,” City of Raymond Administrative Assistant Tia Channel said. “Though the weather report is weird, our only issue will be the high tides — that will be when the water will go over the road.”

The City of Raymond posted high-tide information on its Facebook page predicting early- to late-afternoon high tides as the week progresses with swells varying from 11.6-12.7 feet.

Aberdeen experienced scattered outages but power was quickly restored. Grays Harbor PUD crews responded to a downed wire in the Malone Hill area at 10:25 a.m. Friday, but the issue was resolved within an hour.

The potential for high winds — with gust reaching upward of 50 mph along the coastline — still exists with rain and possible thunderstorms expected to hit the area throughout the weekend.
