A Coast Guard helicopter team rescued an injured man who was stranded overnight in the Colonel Bob Wilderness just east of Quinault over Labor Day weekend.
The 40-year old man suffered a leg injury and was unable to walk out of the area. First responders were able to reach the injured man Sunday afternoon; however, the holiday weekend meant the search-and-rescue teams were spread pretty thin and they were unable to drum up the manpower needed to carry the victim out of the wilderness.
According to a statement from Coast Guard, officers were contacted by Air Fore Rescue Coordination Center personnel just after 11 a.m. Monday. An aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter arrived at the scene about four miles east of Quinault just before 1 p.m. Monday, lowered an aviation survival technician to the injured man and had him safely onboard by 1:38 p.m.
The man was in stable condition when he reached the helicopter, according to the Coast Guard statement, having been tended to earlier by search-and-rescue personnel. He was taken to Bowerman Airport in Hoquiam, transferred to emergency services personnel and taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen for treatment.
