Hundreds of students, staff and parents marched from Hoquiam Middle School to Central Elementary on Monday as part of the Hoquiam School District’s annual back-to-school kickoff and community day event.
Superintendent Mike Villarreal figured there were easily 300 to 500 people participating in the event.
Several organizations were part of the event, according to Jason Ihde, Hoquiam Middle School principal.
• Rotary of Hoquiam and Inspirus Credit Union funded and provided school supplies for students
• Coca Cola provided drinks and field games
• YMCA of Grays Harbor sponsored games and shared information about Harbor After School programs
• Hoquiam Elks provided backpacks for students
• Ted Brown Music was there to support student’s rentals of band equipment
• Hoquiam Lions conducted vision screening
• Behavioral Health Resources and the Hoquiam Mytown Coalition provided information about services in the community
• Harbor City Church, which sponsored the Aberdeen Market Place, shared used clothing that was available for families
This was in addition to the district schools and departments offering and sharing information with families about resources and the start of school year, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 3.
There was plenty of food too, with popcorn, cotton candy, burgers and more. The Hoquiam High School cheerleaders and marching band performed.
