Hospital laboratory receives high marks in unannounced inspection

Inspectors look at two years worth of performance

Lab facilities at Grays Harbor Community Hospital have received accreditation from the College of American Pathology. The organization notified Dr. Eric H. Weppler, the hospital’s medical laboratory director, last week.

It comes following an unannounced inspection in October by six inspectors who reviewed more than 3,200 standards for testing quality, patient safety and staff competence.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors additionally examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. They also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

“We are thrilled to be validated by such a prestigious organization and continue to put our patient’s needs first and strive for exceptional quality of care.” said Charles Skorzewski, director of laboratory services.

Hospital CEO Tom Jensen also praised the lab. “The laboratory professionals at (the hospital) are strongly committed to excellence at both our east and west campus labs,” he said. “This accreditation is a testament to their hard work and commitment.”

The federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which begun in the early 1960s, as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program, according to the hospital.
