A 70-year-old man found dead in his home in the 500 block of Perry Avenue in Hoquiam Thursday morning, prompting a death investigation, died of natural causes, according to Grays Harbor County Coroner Robert G. Kegel.

Officers responded to the scene at 11:10 a.m. Thursday for a report of a man who was not breathing. Given the circumstances at the scene, the department took the precaution of calling out the Grays Harbor crime scene mapping team and additional investigators, said Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

Earlier Friday, before the cause of death had been determined, Myers wrote on the police department’s Facebook page, “It is important for citizens to realize the police must assume all deaths are a homicide, until determined otherwise, because these are such important investigations. Sometimes this can be simple, given medical history and the circumstances at the scene, other times the situation or scene causes concerns and results in a more lengthy investigation.”
