Hoquiam man dead after rollover crash in Utah

Thomas Lee Rasmussen, 64, convicted of murder in the deaths of a couple at their Copalis Crossing home in 1988, died in a car crash in Utah on Monday.

Rasmussen and James L. Thompson Jr. went to prison for the murders of Frank and Elenore Shye. The Shyes were bound before they were shot and robbed. Rasmussen and Thompson were arrested within a few days, found in a Hoquiam motel room.

The crash was a single-vehicle rollover on I-84 south of Ogden. Utah Highway Patrol said Rasmussen sustained serious injuries after being ejected from the car. He died later at the hospital, according to a news release.

A female passenger sustained minor injuries.

The highway patrol said the crash occurred at 8:22 a.m. as the vehicle was traveling east on I-84.

“The vehicle went off the road to the left, over-corrected to the right and rolled off the side of the roadway,” according to the highway patrol.
