Hoquiam hydrant flushing starts May 1

The Hoquiam Public Works Department will start hydrant flushing May 1 to clean the city’s water lines.

It will take about 45 days to complete the annual maintenance program, which involves opening fire hydrants to create high-velocity flows to scour and clean the buildup of minerals and other materials in the city’s 61 miles of pipe. Flushing will take place between 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, except holidays, and continue through the end of June.

Customers may notice discolored water or a change in water pressure when flushing is conducted in their area. Check to make sure water is running clear before using it for drinking, cooking or washing clothes. If there is some discoloration of the water, let the cold water run for five to 15 minutes to clear it.

Questions related to hydrant flushing should be directed to Superintendent of Public Works Chris McMullen, 360-538-3966 or cmcmullen@cityofhoquiam.com.
