Hoquiam council approves 3 percent raise for police

Bid accepted for construction of Ramer Street pump station

The Hoquiam City Council Monday voted to approve a new contract with the police department and accepted a bid from Quigg Brothers Construction to build a new floodwater pump station near the west bank of the Hoquiam River at the end of Ramer Street.

The agreement with the Hoquiam Police Department allows for a 3 percent salary increase retroactive to Jan. 1 for police sergeants and officers. Additional 3 percent raises will be made Jan. 1 of 2018 and 2019 under the agreement.

Quigg Brothers Construction provided the low bid for the pump station.

The winning bid bested the next lowest bid, from Rognlin’s, by more than $100,000 and came in at $1,365,033. Currently, the city has about $992,000 in grant funds for the construction, and City Administrator Brian Shay said expenses above that amount will have to be covered by the City of Hoquiam watershed funds. He added, however, that city staff is pursuing additional grant funding through the Chehalis Basin Flood Authority.

Shay said the city plans to bid and install an emergency generator for the pump station by a separate contract, which is estimated at $80,000.
