Heavy rains overnight Sunday caused a “disruption” in the treatment of sewage from the City of Aberdeen wastewater treatment plant, said City Engineer Kris Koski.
“Intense rainfall overnight caused higher than normal flows to enter the City of Aberdeen’s Wastewater Treatment Plant at 1205 West State Street,” said Koski. “The high flows began impacting the plant’s treatment processes at 1:30 a.m. resulting in a reduction of the quality of effluent being discharged to Grays Harbor.”
The city has notified the state Department of Ecology and Department of Health, and Grays Harbor County Public Health and Grays Harbor County Emergency Management.
“At this time the public is advised to check with regulatory agencies prior to fishing, harvesting shellfish, or swimming in tidal waters in the vicinity of Grays Harbor,” said Koski.
