Flooding predicted along the coast Thursday

Flood warning issued

A coastal flood warning has been issued for today, and could have significant effects on Westport, Ocean Shores and Taholah.

The most severe waves will hit the coast from noon to 10 p.m., with large swells 25 to 30 feet high predicted by the National Weather Service.

Emergency officials say there will likely be flooding in low-lying areas near the shore, along with extensive beach run up waves and erosion. The initial flood watch was upgraded to a flood warning Wednesday afternoon, which is more dangerous and indicates imminent flooding as opposed to probable.

These effects could be magnified if the highest waves occur at the same time as the high tide, which is at 1:17 p.m in Westport and Ocean Shores. The waves are expected to diminish slowly after 10 p.m. today, but will remain above 20 feet through Friday.

The report reminds coastal residents to take actions to protect themselves and properties from the flooding.
