Five outstanding area community volunteers recognized

Lana, Rasmussen, Nagle, Myrsell and MacDonald honored

Earlier this fall, community members were invited to submit to the Westport Police Department nominations of local citizens who go above and beyond to volunteer their time and talents in service of Westport’s citizens.

Many worthy nominations were received and the judging committee noted that choosing just five volunteers for this inaugural recognition program was difficult.

However, after long consideration, the following individuals were selected. This year’s winners include:

• Tanya Lana – For outstanding volunteer leadership and service provided to the South Beach arts community, as well as to numerous non-profit organizations in their fundraising events

• Dennis Rasmussen – For his tireless efforts and dedication in providing food to individuals and families of the South Beach community as the volunteer Director of the South Beach Food Bank

• Larry Nagle – For his always being there when asked and his generous contributions as a trained volunteer with the Westport Crime Watch Patrol.

• Mark Myrsell – For his dedication to preserving and protecting marine wildlife and his tireless efforts to educate the public regarding the importance of leaving marine mammals alone on the beach.

• Verna MacDonald – for her many years devoted to helping our community in a myriad of ways and her continued unselfish commitment to the citizens of Westport and the entire South Beach community.

Each was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Westport and a gift certificate to one of our area restaurants at the Sept. 26, Westport City Council meeting
