Filing week ends; plenty of primaries in August

Aberdeen and Ocean Shores council races crowded

Cody Bridges, former Cosmopolis Fire Chief fired by Mayor Kyle Pauley Tuesday, filed Thursday evening for a seat on the Cosmopolis City Council, running against incumbent Debra Moran.

As filing week drew to a close, numerous city council positions drew a crowd of candidates, particularly in Ocean Shores and Aberdeen. Any race with more than two candidates will result in an August primary, with the top two advancing to the November general election. Nearly all the offices are non-partisan.

With Margo Shortt not seeking re-election, her Aberdeen City Council Ward 4, Position 7 seat had four candidates who filed as of 1 p.m. Friday (filing ended at 4 p.m.): Rebecca Sanchez, Tara M. Mareth, Marissa Aube, and Antara Croft. Current Ward 5, Position 10 Councilman Alan Richrod had two challengers as of mid-day Friday, Debi Ann Pieraccini and Chelsey Leavenworth.

The list of candidates for the Ocean Shores City Council Position 5 seat currently held by Lisa Scott has grown to five: Scott, Patrick Daugherty, Robert M. Doering Jr., Edgar W. Schroll and Lorraine Hardin. Position 7 has drawn three candidates so far: Patric Hayes, David Lynn and Rich Hartman.

In Westport, two council seats have drawn three candidates each: Position 1 will have incumbent Melissa Huerta facing Brylie James and Dennis Hall in the primary; Position 2 has drawn filings from Brenna James, Troy Meyers and Tom Fleckenstein, seeking to fill the seat vacated by Bob Parnell’s recent resignation.

In the two mayoral races in the county this year, incumbent McCleary Mayor Brenda Orffer has filed and will face Chris Miller. Incumbent Oakville Mayor Angelo Cilluffo had two challengers as of Friday afternoon, Bill Breedlove and Anthony Smith.

There are two countywide seats up for election, Prosecutor and Port District Commissioner 3. As of Friday afternoon, the incumbents, Norma Tillotson and Stan Pinnick respectively, had yet to draw any challengers. The prosecutor’s office is the only partisan race on the county ballot. Tillotson filed as a Democrat.
