Elma mayor seeks county commission seat

Sets up primary for commission seat in East County

Elma Mayor Jim Sorensen is running for Grays Harbor County Commissioner, setting up a primary race for the East County district seat being vacated by Wes Cormier, who has already announced his intention to run for a state Senate seat.

Sorensen, who works for the Coastal Community Action Program on housing issues, filed Tuesday morning, stating no party preference. The other two in the race so far are from Montesano: Jamie Nichols, who filed as a Democrat, and John (Jack) Dwyer, who filed as an independent. The top two, regardless of party, will advance to the General Election.

Nichols is the chairperson of Grays Harbor County Democrats and ran for commissioner in 2016. Dwyer, a chiropractor, has served on the Montesano School Board.

Cormier, a Republican, is finishing his second term. He has not filed as of mid-day Tuesday but has said he will run against incumbent Dean Takko, D-Longview, for a 19th District Senate seat in the Legislature.

Democratic Congressman Derek Kilmer will have a Democratic challenger. Rebecca Parson of Tacoma, characterizes herself as from a more progressive segment of the party.

Tuesday was the second day of candidate filing, which ends Friday. The Grays Harbor Courthouse remains closed to most public services, but it’s possible to file online and in person at the Courthouse. The Auditor’s Office suggests candidates call the main number for their office and make an appointment for filing in person.
