Fire strikes West Market St. house for second time in four months

Just before midnight Sunday, an Aberdeen Fire Department medic unit was returning to the south Aberdeen fire station after transporting a patient to the hospital when they noticed flames venting from the roof of an abandoned building just a block from the Aberdeen Fire Department headquarters station.

The house, in the 500 block of West Market Street, was venting from holes cut in the roof by the fire department from a previous fire at the location Sept. 30 of last year. Aberdeen and Hoquiam fire combined to douse the blaze in about 15 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation; however, according to a statement by Aberdeen Fire Battalion Chief Troy Palmer, the house was unsecured and had no utilities, allowing transients free access.

The building is only 800 square feet and was considered a total loss after the first fire. Palmer reminds property owners to secure their vacant and fire damaged properties to prevent unauthorized access.

Slick roads lead to 101 wreck

An Aberdeen man was not injured when his semi truck and trailer hit a patch of ice on Highway 101 and jackknifed into the cement Jersey barrier Monday morning. According to a report by the State Patrol, the drive was traveling southbound near milepost 78 a little after 7 a.m. when it hit a patch of extremely icy road conditions. The vehicle lost control and came to rest across all lanes of southbound 101. The roadway was blocked for two hours. The driver was charged with crossing over the center line.
