Demonstration Saturday against anti-abortion bills

The event begins at 11 a.m. at the corner of Broadway and 1st streets in downtown Aberdeen

Democracy Rising, a regional grassroots community action group for women’s health, will stage a demonstration Saturday morning in downtown Aberdeen against two anti-abortion bills introduced to the Washington House of Representatives. One of the co-sponsors of these bills is 19th District Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen.

HB 1002 would restrict public funds that would be used for elective abortions and bar the state from providing contracts, grants or funding to any organizations that provide abortions not defined as “medically necessary.” HB 1003 would require physicians to notify parents or legal guardians of someone under the age of 18 seeking abortion services.

“We hope everyone who cares about this issue will participate,” said Marianna Hopkins Everson, a spokeswoman for the group. “Local action is needed at this time.”

Demonstrators will gather on the corner of Broadway and 1st streets at 11 a.m. and proceed through the downtown area. They will come together again at 12:30 p.m. to share stories.
