Commission to discuss Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay salmon fisheries

Appointed citizen panel to hear public comment on past year’s management

Management of the salmon fisheries on Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay — and public comment on both — is first on the agenda for the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission’s public meeting Saturday in Olympia.

State fishery managers will provide an overview of the 2016 salmon fisheries, including an assessment of the harvest and how it conformed with conservation objectives set by state fisheries managers. They will also look ahead to fisheries planning in the coming season. The public is invited to comment on the salmon management policies now in effect.

This is the second annual review of the Grays Harbor Basin Salmon Management Policy, which the commission established in 2014. The policy sets goals for the number of fish that make it to their spawning grounds for each species of salmon in both fisheries and commercial; recreational and tribal fishing seasons are driven by the policy.

The Saturday morning session begins with an 8 a.m. public comment period, followed by the Grays Harbor policy review at 8:30, which starts with a briefing from Mike Scharpf, District 17 biologist, and ends with a public comment period on this topic only. After a break, the commission will come back together at 9:45 to discuss the management of the Willapa Bay salmon fishery. Chad Herring, also a District 17 biologist, will provide the briefing, and again public comment on this topic only will follow.

The meetings take place in the Natural Resources building in Olympia, 1111 Washington Street SE just east of the state capitol campus.
