Chehalis River will not open for spring Chinook fishing

April 16-June 30 season listed in 2016-17 sport fishing rules axed

The spring Chinook season listed in the 2016-17 sport fishing rules pamphlet for the Chehalis River starting in April has been canceled due to forecast low numbers of returning fish, according to Region 6 biologist Mike Scharpf.

The season was scheduled to run from the mouth of the Chehalis at the Highway 101 bridge upriver to the Highway 6 bridge in Adna April 16-June 30. According to Scharpf, the forecast for spring Chinook returning to the Chehalis River basin is less than the number of fish needed to replenish the run so it maintains itself at a healthy level.

Steelhead and other gamefish fisheries will remain as described in the 2016-17 sport fishing rules pamphlet, according to Scharpf.
