CCAP takes ownership of new Senior Center building

Aberdeen’s Senior Center, which lost its longtime home when the Armory building burned last June, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday for its new downtown location in the old Aberdeen Eagles building on Market Street.

Since the Aberdeen Eagles club disbanded last spring, the building wasn’t being used, and the Coastal Community Action Program, which operates the senior center, purchased the venue. CCAP took ownership Tuesday.

Because the kitchen is in need of renovations, CCAP Senior Nutrition Coordinator Vicky Johnson said the center has used Hoquiam’s Senior Center to get meals delivered to them, as well as those for the Meals on Wheels program. CCAP received a state grant to remodel the kitchen, and Johnson said that would likely be completed by May.

In its new location, the Senior Center still offers all the same services, such as the Meals on Wheels program and lunch service each day. The center also brings in a variety of speakers to help local elderly people. For example, on Tuesday someone from the Olympic Area Agency on Aging was speaking to people about Medicare renewal. Other days the center has brought in pharmacists or people teaching how to write wills.

The center, located at 208 W. Market St., is open from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and provides free services, but they do encourage donations. Those looking for more information on the Aberdeen Senior Center can call CCAP at (360) 533-5100.
