Sunday Afternoon Live at the Raymond Theatre

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, Sunday Afternoon Live will welcome the Brownsmead Flats to the Raymond Theatre stage for a free concert.

When you see The Brownsmead Flats performing on stage, you may well conclude that they are living the dream, and you may even wish you could be right up there, a part of the band.

The Brownsmead Flats have been together for over 40 years, having begun in the late 1970s at local coastal Oregon potlucks and school functions. Their long-time camaraderie and sense of fun draw in their audiences — sometimes quite literally, with audience sing-alongs and even group dances.

The Brownsmead Flats hail from the small town of Brownsmead, Oregon, a place steeped in the maritime traditions. In fact, they have dubbed themselves a “crabgrass band,” creating infectious music that combines bluegrass with the flavor of sea shanties and fishing lore. They bring that unique blend to eager audiences at such venues as the Stormy Weather Arts Festival in Cannon Beach and Astoria’s annual FisherPoets’ Gathering. These musicians are stellar bluegrass players, delighting listeners with their mastery of mandolin, guitar, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, banjo, harmonica and bass.

The twist is that they channel that bluegrass expertise into songs about rainfall, dangerous river crossings, Lewis and Clark, and other coastal themes for a wonderfully and uniquely Pacific Northwest musical experience.
