Basich Boulevard to remain closed until at least spring

Basich Boulevard between the 1300 block and Harborview Drive will remain fully closed due to an ongoing landslide and dangerous conditions until spring or summer this year, according to a release from the Aberdeen Public Works Department. Major repairs are required to restore the roadway and utilities, the release said.

“Surface settlement of the roadway at the location of the slide was observed in April of 2018. At that time the roadway was closed and a geotechnical engineer evaluated the roadway and hillside. The geotechnical engineer recommended to repair the roadway surface and monitor it for ongoing settlement. Repairs to the roadway surface were completed in September of 2018. Minor, ongoing settlement was observed after that time followed by sudden significant settlement observed on December 22, 2019,” the release said.

In response to the settlement on Dec. 22, the city issued an emergency proclamation and closed the road, according to the release.

Since then, the settlement has developed into a landslide, causing major damage to the roadway.

“Repairs will likely require stabilization of the ground and reconstruction of the roadway embankment, utilities, and road surface,” the release said.
