Armory will be demolished and not salvaged

Aberdeen’s Armory building will be completely demolished and not salvaged, following a decision by the Aberdeen City Council.

The building burned down in a fire on June 9 that destroyed the Aberdeen Museum of History, the Coastal Community Action Program offices, and the Senior Center. The hope is to relocate the museum. The other tenants have found other space, at least for now.

Following a public hearing for the future of the Armory, council members unanimously approved a motion to not preserve any of the structure of the building as the recovery team continues its work.

Members of the public and council members who commented were pretty one-sided in their support of not saving the building. Aberdeen resident Mike Nelson suggested turning the site into a future shelter for the homeless population, and City Engineer Kris Koski wrote a letter saying the site should be “seriously considered” for the location of a future fire station, police station, or city hall, “due to multiple geographic advantages at the site” and due to the need for updates to existing city facilities.
