Antique anchor ‘harvested’ by purse seiner off Westport

Rare nautical relic will be displayed at Maritime Museum

Capt. Jose Sevilla of the FV Tani Rae and his crew snagged an antique anchor on Aug. 24 near Buoy 28. The boat was fishing for anchovies when its purse line snagged the anchor, which was then hoisted aboard.

The Tani Rae belongs to father and son, Doug and Mike Cornman, owners/operators of Westport Seafood and Merino’s Seafood Market in Westport’s Marina District.

Based on its construction, the anchor has been estimated to be around 150 years old and most likely off a sail-powered ship.

Mike Cornman, who is an active member of the Westport South Beach Historical Society, informed Society Executive director John Shaw the day of the find that he would like to donate the anchor to the Society for display and educational purposes.

“I am willing and excited to add this piece for permanent display at the Westport Maritime Museum, as well as the display hall structure as needed. It is an amazing find,” said Cornman.
