Annual hydrant flushing starts Monday in Hoquiam

Annual fire hydrant flushing in Hoquiam starts Monday, Oct. 19.

With about 61 miles of pipe, the flushing is expected to take about 45 days. It’s done annually to clean out the city waterlines and inspect the hydrants.

Flushing hours are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays. Crews create high velocity flows to scour out minerals and other materials that can accumulate in the lines.

During the flushing period residents may notice water discoloration or changes in water pressure. Make sure water is clear before using it for cooking,, drinking or washing clothes. If the water is discolored, let cold water flow from their taps for 5-15 minutes, which should clear it up.
