Tannija J. Smith, 24, of Aberdeen, was killed Saturday in a one-vehicle crash on State Route 8 just east of Wilson Road, about 18 miles east of Elma, according to the Washington State Patrol.

According to the State Patrol report, a 21-year-old Elma man was driving a 1999 Ford F350 pickup eastbound in the right hand lane shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday when the truck struck a guardrail and left the roadway to the south. The truck came to rest on the driver’s side about 25 feet off the road just east of Wilson Road.

The right lane of State Route 8 was closed at the scene for nearly four hours during the investigation. The driver was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital with undisclosed injuries. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the State Patrol.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
