What Is THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta-9 THC, is one of many cannabinoids, which are healthful compounds found in cannabis plants. Others include CBD, CBN, CBG, CBC, and over a hundred more — all of which have their own benefits. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in large quantities in marijuana, which gives the “high” effect. However, in low quantities (legally less than 0.3%), like those found in hemp and the derivative CBD, it significantly adds to the calming wellness effect.
How does THC work?
As mentioned, THC is one of a hundred-plus cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. These all have their own functions and uses, and trigger unique and healthful effects on humans. But how?
Your body has an internal regulatory network of cell signalers and receptors called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. It runs from top to bottom, brain to feet, organs to skin. And it works in conjunction with your central and peripheral nervous systems to help keep your body in balance. That includes such vital roles as pain management, memory, organ and brain function, sleep, and more.
Cannabis plants have their own cannabinoids: CBD, CBN, THC, etc. When extracted from the hemp, these cannabinoids can be ingested in a number of ways (including inhalation). They then enter your ECS and help boost its functionality. It’s like supercharging your body into feeling healthy, balanced and relaxed.
While delta-9 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is certainly the most famous of the psychoactive cannabinoids, it is by no means alone in that category. There are other cannabinoids that exist in smaller amounts in the cannabis plant, referred to as minor cannabinoids, that can also bring bliss and relaxation along with their wellness benefits. These potent compounds include delta-8 THC and delta-10 THC. Over the past several decades, some powerful semi-synthetic cannabinoids have been developed as well, including HHC and THC-0.
The Entourage Effect
Cannabinoids have an interesting effect as they work within your ECS. While many medications and supplements have parallel effects (think Tylenol and Advil), cannabinoids work synergistically and amplify each other. This is called the Entourage Effect.
Full spectrum CBD, which is the most raw form of the extracted oil from hemp plants — and is the only type of oil used in the products above — contains all of the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including THC. Also included are flavonoids, which give the plant its color, and terpenes, which give it its taste and smell. These compounds also have healthful benefits on their own. But, with all parts together, it makes for a deeper, more impactful experience.
Possible Side Effects of THC
As with any new over-the counter medication, prescription or supplement, it is possible to have negative side effects with THC use. Those can include coordination issues, anxiety, increased heart rate, and memory loss. However, if used within product recommendation guidelines, these symptoms are very rare.
