The United Seamen’s service of San Francisco recently presented a “Volunteers Pin and Ribbon” to Victor J. Pavletich of Aberdeen, in recognition of his free services and unselfish devotion to the men of the merchant marine in the past year.
Pavletich organized an information bureau and has actively participated in the agency’s recreational program which attempts to meet the problems of seamen morale.
He is a social welfare graduate of The San Francisco State College. He was graduated from Aberdeen high school in 1938.

Hitting their stride after several ragged performances, Coach Dan Shovlin’s Aberdeen Bobcat cagers turned in a fine exhibition last night in defeating the Centralia Tigers, 39-27 at the Miller gymnasium.
Don Bowers and Chuck Anderson got their shooting range and accounted for 12 and 13 points respectively while Ernie Stein turned in his usual consistent game at guard.
Ernie Linnenkohl, 200-pounder, looked good in the game, giving Coach Shovlin hope of added strength in the line-up. Linnenkohl handled himself well on the floor for a big man, sank a couple of baskets and turned in an outstanding performance defensively.

Unemployment on Grays Harbor remained at a level nearly twice as high as a year ago, while logging activity and sawmill employment have dropped off. Retail employment is up slightly but that is due to Christmas sales.
The Department of Employment Security this week reported an unemployment rate of 9.2 per cent, almost double the Grays Harbor rate of 4.7 per cent a year ago.

A first-class storm was battering the Twin Harbors today, but true to their motto, letter carriers slogged through the wind and rain.
It’s the Monday before Christmas and “this is absolutely the busiest day in the world,” Hoquiam Postmaster Ron Quinn said this morning.
People were lined up when the window opened to mail gifts and cards in time for a Christmas delivery.
“We’re coping, but the weather isn’t going to cooperate today,” Aberdeen Postmaster Sue Ness said.
Packages are coming in as fast as they’re going out. The Hoquiam post office, which usually receives 300 to 300 packages a day, had more than 1,100 to deliver this morning. Aberdeen was in the same situation.
“We’ve got tons and tons of parcels today,” Ness said.

It’s not a new high school, but last night’s agreement to purchase a 27-acre site near Grays Harbor College was heralded as a step in the right direction by the Aberdeen School Board.
The property at the end of Evans Road is owned by Rognlin’s Inc. It will cost the district $258,724.
Board member Jim Mason said the proposed site represents a “tremendous improvement” over the present high school campus “because it offers the opportunity to include at least a couple of ballparks.
Administrators were also enthusiastic about the possibility of having a high school so close to Grays Harbor College.
