Ivan Ruvalcaba has been selected as Aberdeen High School’s Rotary Student of the Month for February.

He is the son of Ambrocia Sanchez. Ivan has participated since seventh grade in the district’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) college prep program and has earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 during his academic career at AHS. He has also excelled in Running Start classes at Grays Harbor College by maintaining 3.7 GPA and making the President’s List at GHC for all five quarters attended so far.

Ivan ran cross country all four years of high school, while also wrestling his freshman and sophomore years, earning a varsity letter. He was a cross country team captain. He also participated in AHS Drama for two years, but was unable to perform due to the pandemic.

Ivan has volunteered at the local food bank and was extremely active for the Bobcats in the annual Food Ball competition, doing storefront canvassing, door-to-door canvassing and helping account for all money that was raised. He was also a student leader at Outdoor School, where he helped teach sixth-grade students about the science of the environment.

Ivan has applied to and hopes to attend the University of Washington. His Plan B is to continue his education at GHC in the nursing program.

Each year, the Aberdeen Rotary Club honors Aberdeen High School seniors through its Student of the Month recognition and scholarship program. One senior is recognized each month between October and May. In June, two of these eight students are then selected for either the $1,000 “Blue” or $2,000 “Gold” scholarship to the school of their choice.
