There’s a new officer in the ranks of the Aberdeen Police Department: K-9 Ronin, a 20-month-old German shepherd in training to become an apprehension officer.

Ronin was donated to the Aberdeen Police Department, according to Chief Steve Shumate.

“Ronin came from a Tacoma animal rescue organization and has shown tremendous tracking characteristics,” he said.

Officer Chad Pearsall put in a lot of the effort to get Aberdeen a K-9 officer, including help securing some funding to offset the cost of the program to the city, said Shumate. The department continues to seek grants and private donations to sustain the K9 program in the long term.

“Our desire is to add a narcotics K-9 at a later date,” said Shumate.
