The second Army-Navy “E” pennant to be awarded in Grays Harbor county today was the proud possession of White Star Lumber company at Whites, and 170 workers wore the “E” lapel pin for outstanding production as they returned to their jobs following the program.

White Star Lumber is one of only seven lumber mills throughout the United States to have won the award.

Presentation of the “E” pennant was by Col. Conrad P. Hardy, Seattle district engineer, representing the secretary of war, the war production board and the chief of engineers.

He said that it was only after a thorough investigation of the quality and quantity of White Star Lumber company production that the award was made. “It is a symbol of appreciation from the armed forces for your help. The army is particularly interested in the pontoon timber being produced at White Star, which is used for pontoon bridges in combat zones, and also for planking of steel panel bridges.”

The Aberdeen Plywood Company started the number 2 dryer Monday at its plant recently purchased from Evans Products and full production should be under way in three weeks.

George O’Brien, superintendent, said that three shifts of five men each will be working on the dryer. He added that work is continuing to get the number 3 dryer, the edgers, presses and sanders into shape.

Evans is still using the number 1 dryer. O’Brien said that when Aberdeen Plywood takes over the entire mill, employment could reach 100 men.

The mill, at the foot of Alder Street, turned out plywood for Evans Products until all but the number 1 dryer ceased operation last year.

The Lady Grizzlies are still breathing the rarefied air of first place.

“For today,” smiled Hoquiam coach Wayne Ross last night at Hoquiam’s Square Garden after his team’s 59-47 victory over Chehalis upped their Black Hills League record to 3-0.

“We did what we aimed to do,” Ross continued.

Kendra Hayes and Heather Reynvaan tallied 16 points each for the winners, with freshman Abbi Reynvaan chipping in 13.

“We figured we had to keep them under 60, and preferably in the 40s,” the Grizzly coach added. “They (Chehalis) scored 77 in their last game.”
