There is a long waiting list from which to draw in case tickets are not called for.

The first concert this season has been scheduled for October 25 and will present Draper and Adler — Paul Draper, creator of his own technique in dancing style, and Larry Adler, harmonica player extraordinary.

A new exhibit has been arranged in the Aberdeen Library featuring paintings and sculpture by Edna Crews of Aberdeen. On the gallery walls are water color and oil paintings done in a modern and non-representative style. The 25 imaginative sculptured pieces in the glass display cases in the library foyer are made from shavings from a lathe in a metal shop. Mrs. Crews is a graduate of Washington State University and has studied with well-known painters such as Kenneth Callahan and Mark Tobey.

“I’ll tell you one thing about getting old — when a man retires, he shouldn’t even think about sitting down and restin’. He should just keep going.”

Those words of advice came from Fred Hasbrouck as he celebrated his 90th birthday in Grayland last week.

A carpenter, logger, fisherman and “you name it” by trade, Hasbrouck worked at an Aberdeen shipyard during World War II, riding a motorcycle back and forth from his Grayland home.

He recalls that when he and his wife moved to the South Beach in 1911, travel between Grayland and Westport was mainly on the beach, because the road was nearly impassable, and the only way to Aberdeen was by boat from Westport. A shopping trip took three days, one for the long boat trip from Westport to the North Jetty to Hoquiam and then to Aberdeen, one day to shop and the third for the trip home.

Paul Strittmatter, the high-stakes personal injury attorney who has put his hometown Hoquiam on the map in legal circles, has been elected president of the Washington State Bar Association this year.

Strittmatter, 50, is one of two attorneys representing 241 South Aberdeen residents suing Weyerhaeuser for medical problems and property damage they link to the company’s treatment ponds.

He distinguished himself for winning a $10 million personal injury case in Grays Harbor County in 1983. It was the largest single award in state history.
