Grays Harbor beaches soon will be guarded by armed foot and horse patrols enlisted by the coast guard, L.L. Croy, chief boatswain’s mate and commanding officer of the Westport station, announced today.
The men will walk or ride every stretch of sand from California to Puget Sound every night and day to help enforce the coast dimout, keep unauthorized persons off the beaches, prevent possible enemy surprise landings or landings of spies and saboteurs, and to scan the sea for signs of enemy submarines.
Most of those enlisted will be ranked as seamen, first class, with base pay of $66 per month.

Sheriff Dennis Morrisette and Aberdeen Police Capt. Alan Marrs are worried that the public is being misled (by sometimes questionable charities) and fear that funding for local programs will be undermined by out-of-state phone solicitations that are difficult to check out.
“These (phone solicitors) are very good at what they do and the public in general are very, very trusting,” Morrisette said.
Tom Rose, the owner of Grays Harbor Pellet Heat in Elma said he contributed to The Deputy Sheriffs’ Journal, the Firefighters’ Memorial Journal and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Journal in 1987.
Rose, who also runs Tom’s Quick Lube & Custom Transfers, said he receives calls from representatives of all three publications each quarter, “like clockwork.” He’s sure the same person calls representing the publications.
The attorney general’s office urges anyone who has been solicited by a law enforcement type publication to call the office in Olympia. And the police department says anyone asked to donate to a drug education program should check with their local department to make sure the organization is legitimate.
“Most people have hearts of gold,” the sheriff added. “And there’s vultures that are circling the United States by phone.”
