Hoquiam’s “most written about citizen” these past two weeks, Harry Strube was back home Saturday night, a free man.

Strube and George Goforth, Humptulips settler, were acquitted Saturday at Montesano of the charge of having slain Game Potector Sherman “Jack” Handron last August 29th.

Asked about his plans now that the trial was over, Strube smiled and said, “Right back to my old job. I’m just a working man and this trial has been a big expense.”

He is employed as a automobile mechanice by the Whitney Oldsmobile company in Aberdeen.

Goforth plans to return to his cabin near Humptulips. During his absence the place had been ransacked, he said, and all his preserves and canned good stolen. Elk destroyed much of the large garden. He will run a trap line this winter and try to get things ship-shape once more.

“A little of this South Sea climate goes a long way,” writes Loran Smth, from a minesweeper somewhere in the South Pacific.

“Whoever called the South Sea islands a ‘lovers paradise’ must have honeymooned in Alaska,” he declared in a letter to his mother who lives on W. Market in Aberdeen.

A gunner’s mate, Smith recently was promoted to the rank of chief petty officer.

Brian Piccolo gets a long awaited chance as Chicago’s running back in the Bears’ National Football League game against Atlanta Sunday. It should be a moment of great joy for him but it isn’t.

That’s because Piccolo is replacing Gale Sayers and while a player can occupy Sayers’ spot on the field, it’s quite another thing to replace him. Sayers, of course, is out for the season with torn ligaments and cartilage in his right knee.

“This isn’t the way I wanted it,” says Piccolo “Gale should be out there.”

Just one item of unfinished business remains between Aberdeen’s 1968 grid squad and a place in history as the Super ‘Cats.

T-Day, and the Hoquiam Grizzlies.

Coach Al Eklund’s astounding upstarts thundered into Thanksgiving with their unbeaten string intact following last night’s 38-0 demolition of dangerous Olympia before an estimated 3,328 Stewart Field admirers.

By winning, the 4th-ranked Bobcats preserved their half-game lead over R.A. Long in the SWW title chase. The crown will be determined a week from Thursday when the ‘Jacks meet Kelso while Aberdeen and Hoquiam collide at Olympic Stadium.

Six Cats hit paydirt for AHS — Jack Hansen, Mike McMeekin, Jack Weber, Steve Frazer, Dan Kivi and Eddie Smith.

An arsonist sparked a fire that could have destroyed one of Aberdeen’s most historic buildings.

But the office and part of the kitchen areas of Billy’s restaurant at 323 E. Heron escaped with about $25,000 damage this morning, according to Aberdeen firefighters.

The fire was started behind the building near the dumpster where cardboard is stored for recycling. It burned up the back wall, then spread through the vent system into the office. The restaurant escaped additional damage in part because it had a fire wall between the office/kitchen area and the rest of the facility.
