Two local theater troupes are holding auditions this month for their next productions.
This weekend, Grays Harbor College Drama will audition for “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”
Based in ancient Rome, this early Stephen Sondheim musical comedy revolves around Pseudolus, a slave scheming for freedom by playing matchmaker for the master’s son. When the plan goes awry, Pseudolus desperately attempts to keep up with his end of the bargain.
Director Andrew Gaines is seeking men and women ages 18 to 80 who sing, dance and have a knack for comedy.
“Non-traditional casting across gender will be considered,” he says, adding that applicants should be prepared to tell a one-minute joke.
Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. Monday and 4 p.m. Tuesday at the GHC Music Pavilion.

The following weekend, the Driftwood Players will hold auditions for their next production, “The Rainmaker.”
The play, written by N. Richard Nash, is a romantic comedy in three acts for school-age children and adults. It centers on a family whose crops and cattle are dying in a drought. Daughter Lizzie faces the prospect of life as an “old maid” taking care of her father and brothers. Starbuck, a man with big ideas, dreams and promises, shows up and sparks some hope in this dispirited family. But is he a confidence man, or a true rainmaker?
Director Kathe Rowe is looking for six men ranging from 20 to 70 years old and one woman age 30 to 45. Rehearsals will begin Dec. 17, and the show will open in February.
Auditions will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, and at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at the Driftwood Playhouse, 120 E. Third St. in Aberdeen.
