Elma High School Career & Technical Education students won several awards at the Educational Service District 113 High School Art Show in March.
More than 300 works were entered in the district show by students from 16 schools. Of those, only 20 are moving on to the Washington State OSPI High School Art Show, a juried competition – and Elma students earned five of those slots.
Photography teacher Rob Beldin and Commercial Art teacher Maurrie Aukland worked with Elma teens to show case their talent through various forms of art.
Elma’s regional winners were Alyssa Sauer, Douglas Westcott, Maddi Everson and Zoe Wright. In addition, Sauer and Gabrielle Hedrick each earned a $1,000 Central Washington University scholarship, and Westcott won a $125 Pete Bryan Award.
Wright, a freshman, will have her 3-D fused glass piece on display at the Old State Capitol Building for the OSPI show.
Sauer and Westcott each have one photograph moving on to the state show. Everson has two.
“We are so pleased that four of the five are photographs going on to the OSPI state show were taken by students in Rob Beldin’s class,” said Aukland. “The competition is rigorous.”
The state reception and awards ceremony will be held in May.
