Missing live music? Looking for a way to support the community for the holidays?

You can have both on Black Friday, when the Olson Bros Band will headline a tailgate concert at the Shoppes at Riverside to benefit the Aberdeen Food Bank.

Aberdeen radio personality Phil Luce said band leaders Luke and Isaac Olson initially contacted him with the idea of putting on a free drive-in concert on the Harbor.

“They wanted to get out and play,” said Luce. “They missed doing live shows, and nobody could go to one (because of health restrictions).”

Luce then called Shoppes at Riverside manager Jasmine Dickhoff to ask whether they could use part of the mall’s massive parking lot. After checking the current state rules, she agreed.

The Olsons were prepared to pay out of pocket to put on the event; but, despite their attempts to minimize production costs (a stage, lighting, sound system, a tent and more), it was looking a bit steep. So they and Luce decided to charge admission, then donate half of the proceeds to the food bank.

The family-friendly event will be staged Nov. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. Luce’s band, Electric Eye, will be the opening act.

The exact location within the mall’s parking lot had not yet been determined at this writing, but it should be fairly obvious as people arrive.

Admission of $20 per vehicle will be charged upon entry. Once parked, the occupants may roll their windows down, open their hatchbacks or settle into their truckbeds to enjoy the concert.

Luce says although the Farmers Almanac predicts no rain that night, “we all know the Harbor weather is not that predictable” — so it would be prudent to be prepared for the possibility.

“So excited to be able to play a show that is open to the public for the first time in a long time!” the Olson Bros Band posted in their Facebook announcement. “We look forward to helping the food bank raise some funds during this crazy time and can’t wait to see you guys!”
